Getting Past the Lullaby (for his Mom, Virginia)

(Billy Bob Thornton/JD Andrew)

Checkin' fevers with her hand
Payin' taxes on the land
Takin' off my boots and shakin' sand

Tryin' to teach the golden rule
Makin' sure I got to school
Vowing she would never raise a fool

Hangin' on in desperation to the way things were
I just can’t seem to grow up without her

She would sing so I could sleep
Cause the nightmares got real deep
And it always broke her heart to hear me cry

I can still hear melodies
When the wind blows through the trees
And I still seem to have trouble getting past the lullaby

On a shoestring all alone
Past the door that she was shown
Pickin' up the pieces, that were strewn

It was never in her plan
To go before I was a man
Never have a chance to walk before I ran

Everything beyond the time she left is all a blur
I just can’t seem to grow up without her

She would sing so I could sleep
Cause the nightmares got real deep
And it always broke her heart to hear me cry

Even though I hear the sound
Sure wish she was still around
To sing a song about me getting past the Lullaby….

She would sing so I could sleep
Cause the nightmares got real deep
And it always broke her heart to hear me cry

I can still hear melodies
When the wind blows through the trees
And I still seem to have trouble getting past the lullaby

She would sing so I could sleep
Cause the nightmares got real deep
And it always broke her heart to hear me cry

Even though I hear the sound
Sure wish she was still around
To sing a song about me getting past the Lullaby….
